This is a new memorial honouring David Arnold and will be installed in the Grove close to the “Cockleshell Heroes” memorial. It will be made of enamelled Lava Stone and set on a metal frame.

The background image is of the Radfan mountains taken in 1964. The memorial has his Royal Marine Cap Badge, the unofficial Froggy emblem and his medals at the top. The picture of David was provided by his family and was taken in 1956 and the memorial is completed with the Elizabeth Medal and the family remembrance.

• Sgt. David James Arnold died from gunshot wounds in Dhala, Aden during operations in the rugged mountains of the Radfan in the Yemen on the 7th August 1964 whilst serving with 2 Troop X Company 45 Commando Royal Marines ~ SPECIAL BOAT SERVICE.
• Prior to this he was a committed canoeist and in 1962 he and a fellow marine came third in a canoe race on the River Thames with the prizes being presented by “Blondie” Hasler of “Cockleshell Heroes” fame.
• In 1963 he and another marine came first in the epic Devizes to Westminster race completing the 125 miles in under 22 hours.
• David is remembered here by sons Gary & Terry, his grandsons Louis, Dale, Dean & Daley, his sister Pat, brother Peter and remembering his widow Ruby who received the Elizabeth Medal in David’s honour.
